Essentially, Bard is Google’s version of ChatGPT. While similar to ChatGPT, Bard distinguishes itself by sourcing information directly from the web. Equipped with the ability to code, solve math problems, and assist with writing tasks, Bard encompasses the typical functionalities of any AI chatbot. What sets Bard apart is its integration with Google’s large language model (LLM) called PaLM 2. Unveiled at Google I/O 2023, PaLM 2 represents a significant advancement over its predecessor, PaLM, which was introduced in April 2022. With the power of PaLM 2, Bard achieves greater efficiency and performance, enabling enhanced capabilities in diverse domains. Where Bard Falls Short We presented a train word problem to both Bard and ChatGPT. While Bard displayed an understanding of the problem’s logic, it failed to produce correct arithmetic calculations. When given a train traveling at 200 kilometers per hour for 45 minutes, Bard inexplicably concluded that the train covered 100 kilometers during that time. This discrepancy raised questions regarding Bard’s mathematical capabilities, especially considering its integration with PaLM 2, which boasts built-in mathematics. Where ChatGPT Excels We presented a train word problem to both Bard and ChatGPT. While Bard displayed an understanding of the problem’s logic, it failed to produce correct arithmetic calculations. On the other hand, ChatGPT’s script lacked the input generation option but provided an accurate response to the problem, highlighting its ability to generate correct outputs when given appropriate inputs. Assessing Bard and ChatGPT Based on our observations, it is evident that Bard, despite its integration with PaLM 2, struggled to solve a relatively simple word problem involving basic arithmetic. In contrast, ChatGPT showcased its competence in both logical reasoning and mathematical calculations. While these observations offer insights into the models' performances, it is important to consider the context and further evaluate the capabilities of each model in different scenarios. These results raise questions about the readiness and effectiveness of Bard in handling mathematical problem-solving. As the field of language models continues to evolve, this comparison highlights the significance of accuracy and reliability in mathematical reasoning, urging developers to refine and enhance their models for real-world applications.
